Old Memoires & Inspiration
My journey into sustainability started as a heart broken child whose mother refused to pack lunch for her in a plastic tiffin box. Coming from a household where we wrapped our chapatis in a mul mul cloth, composted our waste, made our own bio enzymes, reused glass & plastic bottles as planters; wearing plastic was out of the question. I still remember my grandmother would knit mufflers, sweaters for us and we had bundles of table cloths which my grandmother would knit and gift to my mother which we used as table runners unlike my peers where I saw fancy plastic runners which was a trend at the time. I come from values which are deep rooted in making choices which are better for our mind & body, the kinds that satiate your soul because you believe in creating a sense of belongingness with each little possession and a little story to tell.
Fashion Journey
After a 4 year fashion degree and working in the industry for 7 years, and 1 failed shoe business, it ached my heart to work with chemicals anymore but I was ecstatic about hand embroideries. Thanks to my boss ladies I learnt the finest techniques while working for them and that's where I realised that my jam was Indian textiles paired with my love for hand embroideries and natural dyes.
8 years later I founded Maahikaari with my husband, best friend, therapist, cheerleader all in one & well, we're still paving this road and I know it leads to a beautiful beach destination where I will have a store of my own some day but I'm grateful that you're here reading this and I know you too are recalling your childhood home, your practices as a child and well how it has shaped your choices today.
So I encourage you to practice mindfulness and become a part of our community where we rant but like to create a beautiful picture of an optimistic future for our generations to come who will embrace correct hindi in its proper grammar and obviously our Indian textiles.
